Students will make a 50 x 40cm mosaic piece using stone and smalti. These two materials complement each other beautifully as the one is textured and rough and the other smooth, glossy and infused with brilliant colour.
During the course, each student will develop their own modern / contemporary design and then carry it through with personal mentoring. Students will work with a hammer and hardy. We will discuss different substrates, binders and some pitfalls.
This is an advanced course and students are expected to have mastered the basics of mosaic making.
There will be a short talk on the works of some contemporary artists to highlight the fantastic possibilities of this mosaic medium.
For those students who do not complete, they can arrange for mentoring at open studio time and rates.
We will be using ONLY hammer & hardie during this course. We do sell hammers and hardies for those who want to purchase. If you have your own hammer, please bring it along as we have limited availability.
PLEASE NOTE:
Students will each receive a 50x40cm base. Materials include 3kg of stone or granite. Smalti or others to be purchased.
